Press Staff Report

The Charles City Comets, who advanced as far as the Class 4A-Region 7 semifinals while concluding their season with an overall record of 25-6, had six players named to the All-Northeast Iowa Conference Softball Team.

Making the First Team were junior second baseman Payton Hadley, and eighth-grade pitcher Addison Ellis; making the Second Team were senior center fielder Lauren Staudt, senior third baseman Alex Wohlers, junior right fielder Emerson Bohlen, and freshman catcher Edie Collins.

Hadley led the Comets in home runs (4), doubles (11), extra base hits (15), runs batted in (28) and slugging percentage (.621). She was second on the team in batting average (.356).

In her first varsity season, Ellis posted a 24-3 pitching record with an earned run average of 0.68. Ellis struck out 270 and only walked 30 while holding opponents to a .160 batting average in more than 174 innings pitched.

Staudt led the Comets in runs scored (30) and triples (4), and was second on the team with an on-base percentage of .441 while hitting .326. Staudt didn’t make an error in 24 recorded defensive plays in the outfield.

Wohlers led the Comets with a .357 batting average and 35 hits, which include a home run, seven doubles and a team-leading 27 singles. The slickest fielder on the team, Wohlers patrolled the “hot corner” with a quick glove hand, a strong and accurate throwing arm, and great anticipation … especially during bunt attempts.

Leadoff hitter Bohlen led the Comets in on-base percentage (.442) while hitting .308, and in stolen bases as she was successful 27 out of 29 attempts. Bohlen also led the team with 20 walks and four sacrifice bunts.

Collins hit .346 with the team’s second-best slugging percentage (.556). She was also second on the team in HRs (3) and RBIs (21). This season, Collins threw out eight would-be base-stealers.
