CHARLES CITY — The Moneyball lesson of the day.

Get on base.

Dustin Uetz of Busch Empire did just that during the Charles City Adult Softball League Tournament while hitting 1.000 (12 for 12) and helping his team win its third-straight tourney title.

Uetz even scored the winning run in the 21-11 championship game final against the Thundcats last Wednesday at Westwood Park. Colin Quinn drove Uetz home in the bottom of the fifth, initiating the league’s 10-run rule for the walk-off win.

Uetz was later named Tournament MVP.

The two teams in the championship had played earlier in the night where Busch Empire had also defeated the Thundercats by way of the 10-run rule.

As the winners’ bracket survivor, Busch Empire was in the “catbird seat” as the late, great Vin Scully used to reference … meaning that the eventual losers’ bracket survivor would be tasked to win twice in the championship game(s) before Busch Empire won once.

Busch Empire, which won the league’s regular-season title, won every tournament game by way of a run-discrepancy rule — the team feat is believed to be the first in league history.

Though Busch Empire was the regular-season champion, it struggled against the Thundercats, who won four of five of their regular-season matchups.
