Charles City qualifies team, individuals to Girls State Bowling Tournament
Press Staff Report
SANBORN — The Charles City Comets girls bowling team made a long trip on Monday to verify what was virtually a predetermined destination.
While easily winning the Baker Rotation team event at the Class 1A-District 5 Girls State-Qualifier at Locomotion Lanes and Diner located near the western edge of the state in Sanborn — Charles City’s 15-game total (2,361) was more than 400 pins greater than runner-up and tourney host Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn — the Comets punched their ticket to the Girls State Team Tournament next Tuesday (Feb. 20) at Cadillac Lanes in Waterloo.
Earlier in the state-qualifier, four Comets advanced their way to the Girls State Individual Tournament next Wednesday (Feb. 21) at Cadillac Lanes after rolling three-game series totals that placed them in the top four.
Leading the qualifying quartet was freshman southpaw roller Kinleigh Bahe, who rolled a 521 series that included a 189 high game for the SQ individual title.
Comet junior Darien Hesse rolled a consistent 509 series with a high-game of 176 and a low-game of 165; CC junior Payton Hadley had a 506 series with a best game of 177; and returning state-qualifier, senior Claire Girkin, who placed fourth at last year’s individual tournament, bowled a 505 series with a 200 middle game for the individual cut.
Other Charles City individual scores included a 479 three-game series from junior Isabell Crawford, who tied for fifth at last year’s individual tournament; and freshman Miyah Stevenson’s 440 series.
The Class 1A-District 5 Boys State-Qualifier will take place Tuesday at Locomotion Lanes starting at 10 a.m.
Class 1A boys team and individual state-qualifiers will bowl at the same site (Cadillac Lanes) at the same times and dates (TEAM — 3 p.m. Feb. 20; INDIVIDUAL — 9 a.m. Feb. 21) as the girls.
